YWAM DTS age limit: how old do you have to be?

Is there a minimum or maximum age for a YWAM Discipleship Training School? What the age rules are, what a DTS is like in your 30s, 50s or 60s, and what older adults should ask before applying.

YWAM DTS age limit: how old do you have to be?

Two of the most common questions we get are "Am I old enough?" and "Am I too old?" The answers are simpler than people expect.

The minimum age

Our DTS in Granada is for followers of Jesus who are 18 or older on the day the school starts. Most YWAM locations use the same rule for their standard DTS. If you are younger, ask the base you are interested in, because some run programmes for teenagers, and keep the DTS in mind for after you turn 18.

Is there a maximum age?

No. We have no upper age limit, and neither do most YWAM schools. A typical school has a lot of people between 18 and 25, and it also has people in their 30s, 40s and older. Students who come later in life often say the mix of ages was one of the best parts. Younger students gain from people who have lived more, and older students are surprised by how much they learn from the young ones.

Some YWAM locations also run versions of the DTS designed for older adults, often called Crossroads DTS, with a pace and a peer group suited to people in midlife and beyond. If that sounds right for you, the YWAM website lists where they run.

What to think about if you are older

  • Living in community: you will share rooms, meals and schedules. Ask what the accommodation looks like.
  • Physical demands: outreach can involve long travel days, heat and simple living. Tell the school about any health needs early.
  • Work and family: five months away needs planning. Many older students arrange unpaid leave or come between jobs.
  • Insurance: check that your travel and health insurance covers your age and your destinations.

None of these should stop you. They are the questions to ask before you apply so the school can plan with you.

Is it worth doing a DTS later in life?

People come at 35 or 60 for the same reasons people come at 19: to know God better, to hear what He is saying about the next season, and to serve. Older students often arrive with clearer questions, and many leave with a clear next step, whether that is serving with YWAM, going back home to their church with new vision, or something they had not expected.

If you are wondering whether you are the right age, send us your question. We will answer honestly.
